The Do-It-Yourself Network (on cable) has a cool show, Blog Cabin, where they either build or renovate a house for the tv show, and the audience votes on choices as the project progresses on the Blog Cabin website. Think of it as "American Idol" for houses, where the 'contestants' are countertops, faucets and paint colors.
The next Blog Cabin series is slated for Bethel. DIY has bought a dated ranch house on Happy Ave. in Bethel, with a view of Bethel Woods, and over the course of this coming season plans to transform it from a frog into a prince. The plans for the renovation are already up on their website, http://www.diynetwork.com/blog-cabin/index.html. This will be a fun project to follow, and should be great publicity for Sullivan County.
Almost everyone who purchased land after 2003 got burned.
This is a fact.

A fact of your imagination, maybe.

Just to add yet another 2 cents-
I think the area lacks easy-to-find cool shops. They are scattered all over the county, and Jeff would be the closest thing that exists to a concentration. But a good string of shops with buyable, nice artsy home accessories, and maybe a clothing store would at least give you a place to browse around when you left the house.
I remember when the Hampton Jitney was 2 small vans. Maybe we need a jitney? I know Shortline goes to Monticello and Roscoe, but have you ever tried to read their schedule online? Don't. You'll go blind.
I can tell you the rental business is very strong; I have been booked for summer 2010 at least a month, with a waiting list for any cancellations.
So, the area is popular, but maybe not enough to own a home here. Repairs and services here are very expensive, taxes are very high.
If it continues to develop, I think more people will have the confidence to buy. We could use a good marketing campaign-one with humor.

Hey! Mary E. Thanks for the great idea. I going to look into that! Where do you think the destination point(s) should be? I'm a New Yorker with no knowledge of SC but sounds like some money could be made with that!
