All winter I've been passing a construction project on the south side of Route 17B between White Lake and Bethel Woods. There's a big old farm house that's been beautifully renovated, decked out in "burnt raspberry" (if that's a color, but it's the closest descriptor I can think of) with orange trim. A big new building with peaked roofs and big windows sprouted in the field behind the house. I've been wondering what it's going to be. A church? A big antique store?
The mystery ended this week, with a banner draped over the front porch announcing "The Dancing Cat Saloon and Catskill Distillery — Summer 2010." I can't find a website for it yet, so if anybody has any info, please post.

David, A must read!!!!!
First The Gulf, Now The Marcellus Shale: Gas Well Rupture Forces Mile-Wide Evacuation In PA
"The Pittsburgh Channel reports that an explosion at a gas well in the Marcellus Shale, has forced a mile-wide evacuation in Clearfield County, PA. The irony of this event occurring even as CNBC shows some guy mopping up oil with hay from a bucket is beyond sublime. Also, so much for clear energy. There are no details as yet which company's well was responsible for the explosion, although there are is one junk-bond laden firm which comes to mind."

Did you sign a gas lease on your property in Pennsylvania?
Too bad.
No mortgage will be given to a prospective buyer!

As the articles about this welcome new business attest, Bethel Woods has been transformative -- a word that is often employed loosely but is truly applicable in this case. The success of Bethel Woods is all the more extraordinary because of how it came about -- by the personal philanthropy of one local guy, Alan Gerry, who didn't even ask to have his name on it. (Think about that during a walk on any college campus, where even the most modest dorm buildings pay tribute to some donor.) I don't know the guy, never met him. But as his vision continues to bear fruit, remember that there is something uniquely different -- uniquely human -- about Bethel Woods.

This is off-topic, but in other states it's very common to sell a property w/o mineral rights. Sometimes 1 family has owned the mineral rights for generations, but the property itself has changed hands many times.
