I've never quite understood why millions of Americans battle the crowds to go shopping on Black Friday. But they do, and that in this region that causes an annual, notorious traffic jam around Woodbury Commons — located on the main route to Sullivan County, where the Thruway meets Route 17. The lanes to exit off of the Thruway on to Route 17 can be backed up for miles, as can the route over Bear Mountain into Harriman. Friday will be the worst day, but there can be backups exiting the Thruway on Saturday and Sunday as well.
So if you're planning to drive up here after Thanksgiving Day, allow some extra time to get around the Woodbury jam, or consider coming through NJ and PA, via Milford, PA and up to Route 97 into Sullivan County.
